Tutuola

One of my favorite shows of all time is Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. I've already drawn Benson and Stabler so I figured Fin would have to be next. I mean Ice-T is just so great as Fin, he is great to watch on the show. I love the way he plays off of Munch. Munch is another fantastic character, I think I will have to draw him next.

Santa's Helper

Well it is time again to send out a sample illustration to remind art directors that I'm still alive. I love the part of being a freelance artist that means I don't answer to a boss or time clock. But I hate having to fish for business. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

Anyway, this is my latest promotional illustration. I wanted to remind art directors that the holidays are coming up and it might be a good idea to get a jump start on any themed projects. I've never drawn Santa before and it was kind of fun to do, very different from my usual stuff.

Football Money

This is a piece I did for October issue of Milwaukee Magazine. The article was about how people are making money off of Green Bay Packers coverage. I loved working with the magazine, it was an incredible experience, hope I get to do it again soon. Anyway I'm not a sports guy so this was something new and interesting to try.

Burgundy

I find myself having to hug test all of my bears to meet quality standards. While I was hugging this little guy I was surprised just how soft he really is, it's remarkable. I know he may look like he's made out of an old couch, but it's the kind of couch that you take a warm nap on. Anyway, check out more pix of him here.

Two for one

Making teddy bears really allows me to be creative in a way I can't be just drawing stuff. I love to make original, one of a kind designs that no one has seen before. So my latest bear is sort of two-sided. It has a cool pattern front and a soft fur back, I love it. To see more pix of the bear, go here.

Paisley

I love experimenting when I make teddy bears. It's a lot of fun to mix up fabrics and colors and see what come out. Well I made a bear with a pink paisley fabric and I think it turned out great. To see more of it go here.

strike a cord

I decided to post another corduroy bear on my etsy site. If you want to check it out go here.

Good Night and Good Luck

My friend Toni asked me to make her a movie poster in the style of Gone with the Wind for her wedding and I was more than happy to oblige. This was a fun one to do, I've always wanted to be a movie poster artist like Drew Struzen. It's really too bad that they just don't make them anymore. Anyway Toni really liked it and I think it turned out just fine myself. I was really glad I got to see my friend get married and give her a nice present as well.

Sad Panda

Don't know why, I just felt like making a sad little bear. You you wanna see more of him, go here.

Glam Rock Bear

I wish glam rock was still prevalent today, you just don't see it as much as you used to. There is just something so cool to me about people who can glam it up and still be a huge rock star. So in honor of those few I made a little ziggy beardust. You can check him out here.

The Butler Did It

I really love giving my bears mustaches, I think they are really cool. So it seemed appropriate to give this butler bear one, it goes with his bow tie. To see more of him go here.

Golden Brown

This little guy is really sweet to me. I just love his expression, that look in his eyes. It just says love to me. To check out more of this bear go here.

Purple Heart

My latest bear I have to admit was kind of a pain in the ass to make. The swirl faux fur that I used to make it has a very sturdy backside that is makes it like trying to sew carpeting. However the cloth is so cool and soft that it's totally worth it. If you want to see more pictures go here.

Three Dimensional

I have to admit that I’m not a big fan of the new 3D movie wave. I mean does every movie have to be altered to 3D just to make a quick buck? Unfortunately the new glasses don’t work for me, the image just looks blurred and after a while it gives me a headache. I see what Avatar was trying to do, but every other 3D film I’ve seen just seems to use it ineffectively. So as a way of recapturing my childhood, I made a teddy bear with the old style 3D glasses. To see more of him go here.

The F Bomb

I got the idea for this toy a couple years ago actually. My roommates sister has a son and he was turning two years old, at the time she kept telling us to watch our language around the boy. So every time we would drop the F bomb, she said very loudly "F bomb!" So when I was thinking of a present for a two year old, I thought a stuffed profanity would be fun. A couple years later, I decided to make another one. You can see more of it here.

Bear necessities

Making bears out of corduroy is pretty awesome. I really love to utilize a variety of different fabrics when I sew, I think it adds to the originality of each bear. To see more of my latest bear go here.

Bear essentials

I have to say, one of the hardest parts of posting my bears on Etsy is coming up with a decent description. I spend way too long trying to write an interesting, funny quip about each bear. However, while I would never classify myself as any kind of writer, it is a new and interesting creative exercise. If you would like to read my latest work, go here.

Monday Bear

This is a bear that looks so mean he can scare away actual bears. Well, not really but you get what I man. I like this litte guy, he's got a great smile. To see more of him go here.

Magnum Bear P.I.

This new bear is totally awesome to me, I just love his mustache. It reminds me of the eighties when Tom Selleck and the mustache was huge. I really hope it makes a comeback. If you want to see more of the bear, go here.

Hip to be Square

Just uploaded a new square bear to the Etsy site. It's hard not to get a little attached to these little teddy bears when I make them, I only hope that the new owners will love them as much as I do.

Upside down

So this bear has an interesting story behind it. I was trying to make a bear with a little more bowling pin shape to it and once I cut the fabric thought why not turn it around and make a fat head. So I did and this is the final bear. I like him, he's cute. If you want to see more of him, go here.

Squeak

I made this bear with a squeak toy in the middle. It was definitely an experiment, but I think it turned out very well. If you wanna see it go here.

America, F yeah!

I didn't get to post a drawing for the fourth of July so I'm posting one now. This is a piece I did of Captain America a while back as a portfolio filler. It was fun to draw cap, I'd like to do it again soon.

Rabbit bear

This is a bear I sort of messed up on and made his ears too long so now I'm calling him a rabbit instead. Check him out here.

Grin and bear it

Hey, I posted another bear on my Etsy site. It's been great sewing again, but I really want to get back to drawing.

Monday, July 5, 2010

Hero worship

I'm glad I got to do a super hero bear, it's so cool. I can't say enough how I wish I had a bear like this when I was a kid. If you want to see more of the bear go here.

Strike a cord

I love working on stuffed animals, it's fun to work on something physical for once. I posted a new bear on my Etsy site to see it go here.

Saturday, July 3, 2010

Olive Branch

I just posted a new bear over on my Etsy site. I'm really enjoying taking photos of the stuffed animals because it gives me a chance to play around with the camera and do things with Photoshop I wouldn't normally do. Anyway if you want see the new bear you can do so here.

PlushZilla

Well I finally decided to open an Etsy store to sell my plush toys. I'm calling it PlushZilla and you can see the stuff here.

oh what a beautiful morning

This is a cover I did for the Oklahoma Gazette. The assignment was to transform the leader of a local energy concern into something of a Willy Wonka character. I liked working for the Gazette and I hope I get to again soon. The whole time I was working on this I had the Oklahoma! soundtrack going through my head, it was great.

Derailed

This is a piece I did for the Madison Isthmus a while back. I think it had to do with a story about children and hobbies. It was nice because I got to use my nephew Miles as reference for the boy and he loves trains.

"O" Face

This is an Obama illustration I did a while back to drum up some work. I like to use Obama as subject matter from time to time because he usually gets me a couple more gigs.

More Me

Sometimes when I want to sketch something quickly or dick around with Photoshop I'll just draw another self portrait. And today is no different. So here is yet another self portrait.

Take Cover!

The nice people at Fort Worth Weekly sent me a copy of the cover I did with all the text included so I thought I would share it. It's always a treat to see text incorporated into my illustrations. If you are in Fort Worth pick up a copy, it's free!

iron what?

I love the character of Iron Fist, he's so cool. The next big comic book movie should really be about him, he tackles issues!

Tuesday, June 22, 2010

Fans

With World Cup going on I remembered an illustration about rowdy fans I did for Philadelphia Weekly a while back. I find it funny whenever I have to do something related to sports because I am just so painfully ignorant on the subject.

Marks the spot

I love the old costumes of the original X-Men. Those blue and yellow suits were just too cool, I wish they would bring them back.

Sunday, June 20, 2010

Birth Day

I really love the work of director Jonathan Glazer, I think he's got some just fantastic stuff. He did a film called Birth and after watching it I just fell in love with the movie. So as a sort of tribute I drew little something.

Saturday, June 19, 2010

Chow Down

I did a brochure for a vet clinic a while back. It was nice because I got to draw some animals which I don't normally get to do. But then I turned it into a poster, I like the poster better than the brochure.

Yeti Redux

I never felt like I gave this one a fair shake so I decided to go back and revisit it. Since I was rushed the first time around it was nice to take this slow and really work at it a bit more. I was happy with the original but I’m really glad I got to go back and update this one.

Fort Listen

I got another job from the wonderful people at Fort Worth Weekly this week, it was for the cover story about city hall not listening to the people. As always it was an extreme pleasure working with them, I hope everyone in Fort Worth likes the illustration. If you would like to see the full illustration and read the story go here.

Pimp My Illustration

I really love the music of rapper Xzibit. So when I was trying to think of something to draw for a new desktop image I immediately thought of him. I drew this and now whenever I turn on my computer I’m inspired to do my best. Thanks Xzibit.

illustration Madness

This is an illustration I did for Philadelphia Weekly a while back. The article was about making money from recycled grease or something. I wish I could take other peoples junk and turn it into cash. Too bad illustrations don't work that way.
